Dear BWP Members,

It is getting close to time for the annual keuring tour and online registration is now open.  The password for login for current members is your 7 digit phone number.

Breeders now have the option to register their mares or foals without inspection (and save $100!). Branding is available up to 2 years of age for foals. Contact Cheryll Frank at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to see if your foal or mare is eligible. The registration packet is available online. The BWP/NAD highly recommends for breeders to pull DNA on all mares they are breeding to ensure their foals can be registered in case of any untimely death of the mare.

In this newsletter you will find the 2011 keuring tour schedule, information on the new free-jumping classes, location of H-label keuring sites, links to the February Meeting Minutes and updated Bylaws, a write up on the Spy Coast Farm Young Horse Shows, and show results for many BWP Horses.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the keuring tour!!

Free-Jumping Class

Starting this year, the BWP/NAD will now be offering a free-jumping class at select keuring sites.  The cost will be $75.00 per horse and there will be three sections, 2 year olds, 3 - 4 year olds, and 5 years old and up.  It is open to mares, geldings, and stallions.  This will be a great way for breeders to have their horses canter, jumping technique and scope evaluated.  Please check with your keuring host on availability of this class.

Spy Coast Farm Young Sport Horse Show

By Dr. Heather Farmer

With a little trepidation, we loaded five horses into the trailer to go to the first Spy Coast Farm Young Sport Horse show at the WEF show grounds in Palm Beach Jan 22, 2011.  Not knowing what to expect from the horse show or from our horses, we went down the night before to get settled in and find our way around.    The Young Sport Horse show was a great experience for everyone that attended.  It was run well for the first of its kind and all of us new to showing our horses in hand, free jumping as well as under saddle.

Iconic Bay
Dr. Heather Farmer's Iconic Bay (Simsalabim x Lotus T)

The first classes of the morning were the in hand class.  It was great to see so many wonderful yearlings all decked out and ready to go.  After all the age groups in hand, it was time to free jump.  Again the handlers were good with all the horses and trying to get the best performance out of each horse.  The scores and sire and dam were announced on the horses as they were given.  Lastly, the under saddle part of the show got underway with the dressage tests and under saddle class for four and five yr olds.  And not to be out done the jumping portion closed the show. When asked for pointers or help with a certain horses the handlers were more than willing to give advice on the best way to position your horse and show them in hand.

The judging was fair and accurate whether your horse was breed to be a jumper, hunter, dressage, or eventer, they were scored based on confirmation for sport.  Tired we loaded back up to drive three hours home, happy with the day.  We went back for the other two shows (Feb and March) and each show was an improvement on the previous.  Scheduling changes made the day flow faster, increased crowd participation for the event made marketing the horses easier, and changing the ring set up made for easier viewing by the crowd improved each event. The March show even had a catered lunch with a discussion by the judge as to the correct conformation for a sport horse and what they are looking for when shown in hand.   All in all, we got to watch experienced handlers set our horses up and get the best out of them.   We got to network with breeders, riders and people from all over and exchange ideas and helpful hints.  Hope to see you all at the Dec show.
